Wil­helm Richard Wag­n­er was born in Leipzig on 22 May, 1813 and died in Venice on 13 Feb­ru­ary, 1883. Der Fliegende Hol­län­der (The Fly­ing Dutch­man) was writ­ten to the composer’s own libret­to. His first sketch­es for the work date from 1840 with the music com­posed dur­ing the fol­low­ing year.
